A classic comic book character from the 1950s, Valiant very successfully revived Turok in the 90s. Launching his series with a chromium and foil cover (much like Bloodshot #1, the chromium treatment features on a piece that’s stuck to the cover, rather than being the entire cover itself), Valiant brought the Native American dinosaur hunter into their own, shared universe.
This issue catches new readers up on the whole who, where and why of Turok. Alongside delivering the necessary exposition, we follow Turok as he seeks revenge on the cybernetically enhanced, highly intelligent and ruthless dinosaur, Mon-Ark.
It’s a well paced story which packs in quite a lot of detail while setting Turok up for his appearances in the Valiant Universe. Though the cover might hint at some of the worst excesses of the Chromium Age of comics, in characteristic Valiant fashion, Turok #1 is definitely not a case of style over substance, with well thought out writing and superb, detailed artwork.
Though eventually the character would be somewhat mismanaged by the new owners of Valiant, Acclaim, despite them bringing the character to his widest ever audience via the medium of video games, it’s good to see the character’s strong origin at Valiant, after being dormant for so long.
It’s also worth noting that once upon a time, gimmick covers like this would almost certainly guarantee a massively inflated price, but due to the massive overprinting and lack of interest from collectors over the years, this and many other Valiant comics are incredibly affordable these days. I, for one, am very happy to have the gold foil Turok #1 in my collection.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
