The crew of the USS Omega (the eponymous, final warp-capable ship under Starfleet control) are facing down certain death, with the most fanatical Klingons in the universe facing them down. With James T. Kirk’s extensive experience with their foes, however, our crew may well be in safe hands.

I’m still not sold at all on the necessity of resurrecting Captain Kirk in his prime (or at all). Especially as his supposed insights into Klingon culture, which are meant to turn the tide, could just as easily come from any other Starfleet captain from the few hundred years since he died (or indeed, any of the Klingon personnel serving on ‘our’ side).

Yet there’s no denying that The Last Starship is telling a thrilling tale so far, with unique art that feels at once retro and inventively contemporary. It’s beautifully coloured too.

The action sequences are phenomenal, and there are some genuinely shocking moments which make everything incredibly exciting. So it’s hard to begrudge the series for its big, Kirk-shaped gimmick. And it really does feel like a gimmick at this point; The Last Starship would likely be a much more interesting story without using Kirk as a story crutch or a sales technique.

The final panel is absolutely baffling, but I guess that trust should be given to the writers; let’s see where this is heading before we go off the rails about one particular character’s close encounter with a formerly deceased starship Captain.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
