After reading the gorgeously Chromium-covered Ninjak #1, I thought I’d take advantage of my Kindle Unlimited subscription to check out more of the comics from the earlier days of Valiant Comics.
Colin King is a British spy, yet perhaps oddly he dresses and equips himself like a ninja. Using the codename Ninjak, King travels the globe, opposing the nefarious Dr. Silk and his evil plans.
The main character is essentially James Bond in ninja garb, and that unfortunately brings with it some uncomfortably casual misogyny. However, this misjudged element does subside, and the narrative, as well as King himself, definitely becomes more appealing as it progresses.
The overly stylised artwork of Joe Quesada is really impressive at first, but it’s oh-so-90s in that it looks great, but it’s often at the expense of clarity in the storytelling. Once the art torch is passed to different artists who employ a more simplified, but still appealing style, the narrative feels as if it becomes a lot more compelling at the same time.
Though I wasn’t sold on the whole ninja spy thing at first, the two prequel issues, #0 and #00, offer fantastic insights into the past of characters on both sides, and they’re absolutely riveting to boot. They vastly improve the overall premise, so it’s great to have them here.
And honestly, having now read this initial six comic (plus two zero issue) run, I’m really looking forward to reading even more Ninjak. As with all of the other Valiant comics I’ve been discovering recently, it may have taken me more than 30 years to finally read them, but they’ve been worth the wait.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
