If there’s a good way to take a photo of a chromium comic book cover, I’ve yet to discover it. It’s either getting a decent photo which doesn’t show off the texture and metallic sheen, or show both of without being able to see the colours of the cover properly. Still, thankfully I’ve been able to use enough adjustments to make it look halfway decent, because as always, the chromium cover for this particular comic, Psi-Lords #1, looks awesome.

It’s the year 4020, and the Psi-Lords are looking to protect the Earth. No one trusts them, or at least they don’t until X-O Manowar antagonists, the Spider Aliens, show up and make a nuisance of themselves as usual.

This issue feels like exposition heaped upon exposition, and it’s not particularly enjoyable. You do need to have a bit of a head start with the Valiant Universe to get the most out of this issue, though it does at least try to give you everything needed to kick the series off.

The main gimmick here is that the comic is presented in ‘Valiant Vision’, which requires special 3D glasses to see. I don’t have them, and consequently the colouring throughout this comic feels very strange, with a bizarre colour scheme that likely only makes sense once viewed through the glasses, in the intended fashion.

Gorgeous cover and unique colouring aside, the actual content of Psi-Lords #1 does fall quite flat, and it feels like an unnecessary addition to what was a really strong lineup of comics at the time.

My problem is that I can’t resist a chromium cover, as my readers know well!
