The Kai-Sei Era tale of intergalactic kaiju action continues in Starship Godzilla #2. It’s hardly a spoiler to say that a certain, three-headed kaiju monarch shows up in this issue, given that he’s on the cover, but what’s cool is that there’s so much more going on here.

Stopping off at a gambling planet for repairs, our crew are still being pursued for their stolen kaiju eggs. Distracted by the dangerous, local sport, can they win some cash and get off the planet before they’re caught? Or worse, eaten?

This series, set in IDW’s new shared Godzilla continuity (the aforementioned Kai-Sei Era), continues to impress. It’s like a mash up of your favourite outlaw-led sci-fi; a little Cowboy Bebop, a pinch of Firefly and a dash of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for good measure. It’s great fun, and the added intrigue of having a traitor on board who’s known to us, but not to his oblivious crewmates, adds a further layer of tension.

It’s brilliantly illustrated; I’m in love with the bubblegum colours and deliberately rough-edged style of Oliver Ono’s art, and I honestly can’t wait to read more. Starship Godzilla is an unusual concept for the franchise, and so far it’s been carried out beautifully. The kaiju series feels like it’s in great hands with IDW, and the unique set of titles that comprise the Kai-Sei Era so far.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
