Look, I know I’m not reading all that much at the moment, which might make what follows seem like a bit of an empty compliment. However, Starship Godzilla is definitely my current favourite comic, and it’s not even close. It’s that good, in my opinion.
The crew of the titular craft (which is just a transformed Mechagodzilla) arrive at a precariously constructed mining colony, with the delivery of their stolen kaiju eggs on the cards. Ayan starts snooping around and finds something big and disturbing behind the scenes, but in the process also finds a very intriguing new ally. Of course, the egg delivery doesn’t go to plan, and things go boom in the most spectacular way.
I feel like I’m running out of ways to describe how much I’m enjoying Starship Godzilla, but this issue really did knock it out of the park. It’s an incredibly fun caper with some great development, in terms of overarching plot and individual characters.
Ayan’s big scenes are superb, with a potential love interest who’s introduced with a bang, adding a new dimension to the overall plot in the process.
Delivering the breathlessly paced script with superb art is par for the course for Oliver Ono at this point, but there are genuinely jaw dropping sequences here. There’s a (spoiler alert) transformation for the eponymous Mechagodzilla which seems a bit abrupt, feeling like it could have been a big sequence in itself, but there’s a lot of elements jostling for position here, including the proper reveal of the primary antagonist, so it can be forgiven.
As I’ve been playing catch up with the series, I’ve been reading it at the pace the story benefits from, so it’s a shame I’ve now caught up and have to actually wait for issue 4 (oh, the humanity!). One thing’s for sure: it can’t come out soon enough.
