In my review of Transformers #25, which was the first issue to be written by Robert Kirkman following the departure of the excellent Daniel Warren Johnson, I said I was sufficiently disappointed that I wouldn’t continue to read the series.
Never underestimate the power of a GlobalComix subscription which makes plenty of comics available to read at no extra cost, however; without having to pay more for Transformers #26, it was only a matter of time before curiosity got the better of me. Was it worth the read, considering it technically didn’t cost me anything to do so?
Not really. The series continues to become more integrated into the wider Energon Universe, and characters such as Miles Mayhem (ha) from MASK just stick out like a sore thumb. Kirkman doesn’t seem to have a grasp on how Optimus Prime ‘sounds’ either; the character has a particular cadence to his speech, with words carefully chosen, but for whatever reason it just seems off here. There’s also far too much going on, in too many different places at once, and barely any of it is even particularly engaging.
That said, I really like Dan Mora’s art. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but I think his Transformers look gorgeous, and he handles action scenes in a really dynamic way too. There’s a subplot involving the Decepticon, Thundercracker, which provides some genuinely moving moments.
Overall though, it’s not a patch on Daniel Warren Johnson’s run on the comic, and even without comparing it to the previous writer’s successful stint, I’m definitely not interested enough to shell out any cash for more of Kirkman’s underwhelming story.
