I’m not the biggest Star Trek fan in the world by any means; I can take or leave most Trek-related shows and movies, though the ones I do enjoy I tend to be really fond of. One example of that is 90s Star Trek show Deep Space Nine, which I absolutely adore.

The darker, complex themes running through the show’s duration, along with a peerless cast of interesting characters and tons of interpersonal conflict (missing from much of classic Trek) really make Deep Space Nine my favourite Trek of all, and it’s not even close.

So when I discovered this 2020 series from IDW, at that point the first DS9 series in a decade, I snapped it up straight away. Let’s check out the first issue of Too Long A Sacrifice!

Station Doctor Julian Bashir and his close friend Garak meet up for something to eat and their usual gossip session, at a restaurant chosen by the Cardassian ‘Tailor’. Things turn deadly pretty quickly, however, when a bomb destroys the restaurant and many lives are lost. Enter DS9’s Security Chief, Odo, who discovers many different theories for who could have been responsible, most of them plausible. So who did it, and why?

This noir-esque detective story is a fantastic use of the station’s setting, along with the eclectic mix of species and political stances. Though we don’t get too bogged down in details or commentary, it’s a great procedural with the fantastic Odo right at its centre. The artwork is spot on, and the script does a fantastic job of giving each character their familiar, distinctive voices and personalities. It truly feels like the first act from a lost episode of the show.

If I have a complaint, it’s that this issue feels as if it ends far too abruptly, but of course with another three issues to go, there’s lots more of the plot to be uncovered by our favourite, shape shifting Security Chief.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
