Do you know how obscure a comic has to be for it to be missing from the big, widely used comic tracking apps? I thought I’d found no comic that obscure, until I picked up late 90s Indie comic, Greenleaf in Exile #1. I was surprised that I couldn’t add it to my collection tracker, but also quietly impressed that this small press title had somehow made its way to the back issue boxes at Vanguard Comics in Gosport.

I wasn’t even sure what to expect from creator Doug Anderson’s Greenleaf in Exile; I was just really taken with the cover, and thought I’d check it out.

It turns out that we have a Fables-esque story of legendary beings exiled to the real world, with something nasty about to find them. It’s worth noting that it predates Fables by a good few years, however.

The Greenleaf in question is the mystical, mythical Animal Master of Albion, also known as Herne the Hunter. Herne has worked out a deal with a heartbroken human to get his memoirs transcribed, but unbeknownst to him, someone, or some thing, from his past has found him.

The script, which I found a little confusing at first, soon settles into a more easily understandable rhythm. The art, in black and white, is detailed and gorgeous.

It’s a shame that this comic now seems so difficult to get hold of. I’m going to try and find more, because the story is really intriguing and I’d love to see where it’s headed. Greenleaf in Exile is impressively produced for a small press title (especially one from the 90s), and it’s a shame that its indie status prevented it from reaching a bigger audience.
