I’m still baffled by Udon’s handling of their Darkstalkers X Street Fighter series, Lords of the Makai. Each part is a new #1 issue with a different title, but it’s telling a continuous story of part of Earth (most of Chicago, to be precise, not that it particularly matters) being trapped in the Darkstalkers realm, with the characters from both fighting game series teaming up against the evil forces of Jedah Dohma.
It’s mostly an excuse for big, campy fight scenes, in all honesty. And that’s fine with me; in true Udon style, everything looks gorgeous and the action is worth the price of admission.
It’s hardly deep stuff, but then if you know what you’re signing up for, it’s all good, harmless fun.
It’s a shame that the Street Fighter characters, except for one notable exception, are absent from this issue entirely though. Surely not making use of a big, diverse cast ruins the point of a big scale crossover, right? And it’s not as if many Darkstalkers characters appear here either; it’s a fairly self contained few scenes with very few characters involved.
That said, it is still enjoyable enough, but I do hope that more is made of the crossover potential as we head into the final few issues of the ‘series’. I’m entertained, but can’t help thinking that there could be a bit more to this, despite its charm and excellent production.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
