Fourth wall breaks, self referential dialogue and even an It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia reference? That’s the fourth issue of TMNT multiversal mashup, Battle Nexus, in a nutshell.
Donatello is faced with his own creation: the robot Turtle, Metalhead. It’s not the exact Metalhead this particular Donatello created, however, necessitating some of his legendary ‘Donatello does machines’ skills. Can he be the first Turtle to overcome Savanti Romero’s challenge? Or is he doomed to suffer the same fate as his brothers?
Of course, there’s a backup story too, and it’s just as silly and entertaining as they’ve all been.
This issue is notable for kicking off with a fight, before at least some of the multiversal Turtles are finally able to start planning their retaliation against the nefarious Savanti Romero. Prior issues have all kicked off with exposition and then a fight, with plenty of set up required to sell the mad, but very cool, concept of the Battle Nexus itself.
It finally feels like the backstory has been told, then, and the process of getting us to a climax is underway. Ending on a great cliffhanger, this issue of Battle Nexus is hugely enjoyable; the series as a whole so far has been much better than a multiversal battle royale has any right to be. So let’s just hope that high bar of quality is reached again in the fifth and final issue.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.
Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!
All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
