I’m slowly working my way through DC’s Absolute line of comics, and have been impressed with every one so far. I began with the super weird, highly experimental and very clever Absolute Martian Manhunter, before moving on to Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman and then Absolute Wonder Woman. Each one has exceeded my expectations, though I will admit that by the end of the first Absolute Martian Manhunter story arc, the straight-faced mean-spiritedness did make me somewhat weary.
Moving on to Absolute Green Lantern, this first issue is a brilliantly written and frequently surprising story. Hal Jordan has been given something by an alien named Abin Sur, and it seems that it’s far too difficult for him to control. Getting away from civilization, he’s stopped by the police and does his best to ensure that he’s left alone, but the consequences of him being stopped are dire…
Al Ewing, always a reliable pair of hands, is firing on all cylinders with this opening chapter of Absolute Green Lantern. There are numerous twists on the lore, and it isn’t afraid to shake things up quite a bit. Sometimes, alternate universe stories or reboots can feel like they change elements of the original stories just for the sake of it, but it never feels like that with Absolute Green Lantern.
It draws you in from the opening page and it barely stops for breath over the course of the issue. We’re left with a very intriguing and unforeseen cliffhanger too; on the evidence of this issue alone, you can add another comic to the list of excellent Absolute titles.
With this line, it seems that DC are really pulling out all the stops to create a dark, believable and entirely new universe; a universe which takes a lot of 90s excess and edginess, but uses more contemporary writing to make the stories much more satisfying to read.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Absolute Green Lantern develop, and it seems like we’re in for plenty more twists as the series continues. Bring it on!
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
