A small group of capable young mercenaries try earning their keep, despite the threat of bandits and rivalries hanging over their heads. Meanwhile, a dark prophecy seems close to fruition, with shifting loyalty and betrayals being an ever present peril. In this world, where magic and monsters are real, danger lurks around every corner, and tragedy can strike when least expected.

This first issue of a five issue story (with further issues planned beyond this arc) wastes no time in shocking the reader with swift betrayals and death in its opening sequences, before flashing forward to introduce us to the main cast.

Though it’s unclear where the prologue and final few pages fit within the apparent main focus of the narrative at this stage, with a few elements that are somewhat confusing once the final panel is read, no doubt all will become clear as the series progresses.

The art, currently in black and white throughout due to funding for the colouring and second issue to be funded via Kickstarter (the campaign is live as of the time of writing) is solid throughout, with excellent action scenes, along with liberal use of violence and gore to underscore the danger inherent in the fantasy world the story is set in.

It would definitely benefit from some clarity that colour would assist with, and as you can see from the page included here, some colour work has already taken place.

It’s a really strong start, and though bookended by seemingly disconnected scenes, no doubt something big is being set up to turn this from a small, character driven tale into a much bigger scale, epic fantasy saga.

You can help to bring the fully coloured issue #1 to fruition via the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Issue #1 is available to read on GlobalComix in full (in black and white) right now.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
