Given that I’ve become so deeply invested in IDW’s new Godzilla shared universe line, the Kai-Sei Era, via their sci-fi title Starship Godzilla, I was thinking that I needed to check out their other series. Which led me to the beginning of the Kai-Sei Era, right here in 2025’s Godzilla #1.

Experimentation with a mysterious type of energy back in 1954 caused the awakening of Godzilla, changing the world forever. In the years since then, many more kaiju have awakened and the world’s governments have found ways of dealing with the giant monsters. The US, for example, has a crack team of heroes named G-Force, and they’re about to get their newest recruit. Not only that, but they’re also on the cusp of facing their most unique threat, and it’s not Godzilla…

This issue’s events, world building, concepts and characters are introduced at such a breakneck pace that it does make you wish that writer Tim Seeley would slow down at least a bit. We’re barely out of the prologue (itself stuffed full of details) before we’re introduced to the US-backed, misfit-filled superteam and new recruit, Jacen Baird; then the next thing you know, they’re fighting a rogue, familiar kaiju who’s outside of their normal stomping grounds, and there’s still more ground to cover.

With so little time for each individual element to breathe, the human, G-Force characters aren’t quite fleshed out enough yet beyond a few obvious tropes, though the team’s ultra patriot Commander does a good job of providing us with plenty of relevant, political commentary through his cringily jingoistic dialogue.

The art, by Nikola Čižmešija, is superb throughout, and this is another series from IDW that proves Godzilla stories don’t have to be mindless monster mashes you may expect; setting up a saga of superheroes vs kaiju is an excellent concept, even if the execution does fall down ever so slightly.

Despite the rather overstuffed start here, you can’t fault the ambition or IDW’s efforts to do something completely different, and inter-connected, with the Godzilla licence.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
