I grew up watching, adoring and being absolutely terrified by The Twilight Zone. Though by the time I saw the show, it had already been rebooted with an updated colour version, the ‘new’ series didn’t quite hit the mark for me, but the old, black and white episodes truly got under my skin. To this day, it’s a show which has so much to say and a very clever way of saying it, with so many social and political points unfortunately still relevant.

Though Rod Serling’s iconic, timeless show is no stranger to the comic medium, this latest series (from IDW) is undoubtedly the most faithful yet.

This first issue concerns itself with some classically Twilight Zone-esque themes; wealth, power, desire and the hubris it brings. To say more at all, to offer any sort of synopsis, would be verging on spoiler territory; the most effective trips to The Twilight Zone occur when you know nothing about them in advance.

It is, however, fair to say that this story feels both very true to the original show and incredibly relevant. A billionaire, a sketchy island and clandestine offshore activity; it’s possible it couldn’t be any more timely.

The completely black and white interior and exterior pages, the Rod Serling narration; it’s all so well done, and so true to The Twilight Zone that it’s quite the remarkable feat. Going back to the point about it being timely, another aspect of The Twilight Zone that we’ve mentioned is that it’s not just timely, but timeless. Sure, the presentation and the technology ages, but its commentary, even though it should change, unfortunately does not.

It seems that IDW have really tapped into something special here, and with the anthology format being employed with a rotating lineup of creators and stories, this one could run and run. Rod Serling would be proud, I’m sure.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
