The first issue of Godzilla’s 2025 series was an enjoyable, but somewhat busy cocktail of character introductions and world building. That said, it was acting as the starting point for IDW’s new Godzilla shared universe line, known as the Kai-Sei Era, so there was quite a lot of groundwork to be laid.
In this second issue, the aftermath of the Anguirus mission leads to a terrifying discovery, and a foolhardy plan that seems destined to cause more havoc. In the background, dark forces loom, and not all people are entirely on the side of anti-kaiju team, G-Force…
The more plot-driven events of Godzilla #2 make it a much more satisfying and involving read, with the necessary backstory and status quo having been covered in issue 1. Things still move at quite the pace here, and its focus on the ground level, human characters with the constant threat of kaiju in the background is a smart decision.
It’s also really interesting to get the take on how other countries, particularly Japan, seek to deal with the kaiju threat. It stands to reason that the US, with their über-patriot Commander, would take an ultra-militaristic approach, of course.
Getting introduced to a new human faction here is surprising but very welcome, adding even more flavour to the danger our characters face on their never-ending mission.
So far, the Kai-Sei Era has been really good, and there’s a surprising amount of variety in the comics on offer so far. As a lifelong fan of Godzilla who hasn’t always been overly enamoured with hos he’s been handled on the big screen, these comics are really scratching that kaiju itch in the right way. I’ll definitely be covering more of them in the weeks and months to come.
