The crew of the Starship Godzilla have defied the Xiliens in an attempt to save the innocent mining colonists. While the crew fight for their lives, and the integrity of their kaiju ship (which is a reconfigured MechaGodzilla), Ayan attempts a daring rescue, to deal with some unfinished matters of the heart.

I’ve really enjoyed this series, which puts a very Guardians of the Galaxy-style spin on the future of IDW’s shared Godzilla continuity, otherwise known as the Kai-Sei Era. Though the crew are, mostly, not particularly likeable, Ayan has been an engaging and endearingly sympathetic protagonist throughout, and the in-crew betrayals have mostly been rectified and forgiven by the end of this story arc.

Yet there’s a nagging feeling that this climax just feels too rushed, after a well paced build up. Along with this, despite the fact that I have really liked Oliver Ono’s rough, busy art (as well as the unusual colour palette by Jonathan Dobbs, helping to give the comic a very distinctive look), there’s the sense that it can feel too busy at times in this issue, lacking a bit of storytelling clarity despite the crunchy, weighty action that’s taking place.

There’s definitely a few moments where I wasn’t entirely certain about what just happened, though ultimately the story doesn’t suffer for it overall.

It looks like the series is continuing with a new #1 after this opening arc, which does leave things very much open-ended, and on somewhat of a cliffhanger that raises the stakes for the crew too. Despite mild disappointment with this lightning paced climax, I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next chapter in the saga of Starship Godzilla.
