It’s hardly the season for it, but I’ve had the first issue of 4-part mini-series Star Trek: Holo-Ween in my collection for a while now, and hadn’t managed to get around to reading it. Finally, the time has come!
The crew of the Enterprise have all been feeling somewhat down after a journey through a dangerous solar storm. Ship counselor Deanna Troi can sense the mood on board, and to help lift the spirits of his personnel, Captain Picard agrees to a celebration of Halloween. Yet the ship seems to have picked something up, and soon crew members are going missing. with weirdness emerging inside, and from, the holodeck, what’s going on?
A sort-of sequel to an episode from the original, 60s Star Trek series, this is the beginning of a fun, silly caper that we see little of in TV shows these days. With smaller ‘season’ runs and the feeling that every episode must narratively tie in to the others, one-off, campier tales don’t often get a look-in. Of course, this sort of ‘monster-of-the-week’ episode was common during the 60s, 80s and 90s era of Trek, and it feels right at home in comic form.
There’s some fun stuff here, and it’s illustrated in a nicely stylised way, all clean lines and simple blocks of colour. Plenty of familiar characters make an appearance, and they all seem to be written well too.
Though the blurb mentions ‘horror on the holodeck’, it’s all very tame and pretty accessible even if you haven’t seen the TOS episode it uses the villain from. Star Trek: Holo-Ween #1 is enjoyable enough that I will be reading more, especially given the ending, which kicks things up another daft notch.
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.
Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
