After reading the Marvel version of the crossover (Deadpool/Batman #1), it’s the turn of DC with Batman/Deadpool #1.
The initial story in this anthology is very exciting in theory: a typically meta, mind-bending tale by comic book legend, Grant Morrison. There are so many cool ideas and concepts here, and though Morrison seems free to let themself loose here, there are parts of the story which end up being a bit of a pretentious mess in places. Still, it’s leagues ahead in terms of ambition against anything in the Marvel issue, and it’s also beautifully illustrated by Dan Mora. The meta aspect does, of course, work very well with Deadpool, and when its trademark Morrison flourishes work, they really work.
Sticks and Snikts is a great meeting between Nightwing and the Laura Kinney Wolverine. With great art and superb pacing, this definitely leaves you wanting more than the reduced page count we get here.
The Constantine/ Doctor Strange story is, for me, the highlight of the issue overall. Just a great, magical crossover with some more cross-universal colliding of characters hidden within.
I found the rest of the issue less interesting; Ms Marvel and Static Shock was fun, and there’s some lovely character work here, but it definitely needed more room to breathe.
The Hulk and Harley Quinn crossover showcased on my variant cover above was entertaining, but barely leaves an impression. Again, perhaps it would have benefitted from more pages?
Regardless, this was a fun explosion of the two rival universes coming together, and I’m looking forward to reading the next chapter in the collaboration: Superman/Spider-Man #1. Which I already have in my collection, and will be reviewing shortly!
