I was well on course to have had a Maneater review ready by now, but unfortunately a bug in the game deleted my save file and wiped my 16+ hours of gameplay. Though developer Tripwire Interactive have said that they’re aware of the issue and are working on a patch to fix the problem, after two weeks on release there’s still no guarantee that players won’t suddenly have all of their progress wiped out by the bug.
It’s not good enough, frankly. Especially as Maneater’s official Twitter account doesn’t have a pinned tweet addressing or raising awareness of the issue – instead they’re choosing to continue promoting the game in its current state.
It’s a real shame; the game is brilliant fun – despite the early game being a tedious grind and the fact that camera issues render the more frantic combat scenarios next to unplayable in the later stages of the game.
I don’t feel comfortable reviewing and potentially recommending the game at this point, but I’m prepared to give it another shot and a fair review once it’s fixed. The save bug is so widespread and so damaging, however, that I genuinely think that the game should be taken off sale until the problem has been taken care of. It’s seemingly triggered at random (mine happened when I was at level 30, but other players I’ve spoken to mentioned it happening to them at levels 12, 16 and 20) – so it could strike at any time.
My appetite to try and complete the game while there’s a danger of losing all of my progress has completely gone, understandably. So this is likely to be the last coverage I give the game for a while. It gives me no pleasure to report on this when it’s been produced by a talented team on a smaller budget – but getting the game out of the door in this state and leaving it that way for a number of weeks is something that can’t go unaddressed.
