Spoilers for Season One of Snow Angels abound in this review. Consider yourself warned!
Having lost their father at the end of Season One, Milliken and Mae find themselves following a mysterious signal to who knows what – outside and far beyond The Trench, which they had previously been led to believe was endless. Reeling from the revelations imparted by a dying Pa, they push on – but can they survive the harsh, freezing wilderness? The wilderness isn’t even the only threat to their survival either – The Snowman is still out there somewhere…
Jeff Lemire and Jock’s world – which we’re being dripfed more and more details on – continues to be hugely compelling, with the initial rules for survival having long since been broken. The darkness and tragedy of the story is contrasted by the devotion of the two sisters, who seemingly face impossible odds.
Though the shocks come thick and fast and a few new elements are added in to the narrative, the central characters keep us grounded and glued to the page. Snow Angels continues to be one of the best new comics I’ve read in a long time.
