The nefarious Necroton’s Deathlyfe Tag Team Tournament gets underway in this third issue of Do A Powerbomb. Lona and her tag partner, the masked giant Cobrasun (with his identity revealed to readers as Lona’s father, though she remains unaware) are fighting for the chance to resurrect Lona’s mother – as tag team Sun & Steel. Yet the stakes for some of the other teams in the tournament are just as high, just as tragic – and just as personal. The pressure is on for Sun & Steel – especially as it’s revealed that Earth is the only place in the universe where wrestling is staged.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s work as the writer and artist of Do A Powerbomb is absolutely phenomenal. Not wishing to mince words, this third issue is probably my favourite single issue of any comic I’ve read in 2022 so far. It’s got humour, heart, drama and some absolutely stunning action sequences – with one of the best wrestling matches I’ve ever seen in the pages of a comic. Inspiration seems to have been drawn and references smartly used from many sources: video games, manga, anime, superhero comics, nature documentaries (of all things) and of course, the over the top world of professional wrestling itself.

It’s a riot of colour and style, with a compelling and dramatic story to push the intensity of the action. You don’t have to be interested in wrestling to enjoy this foray into sci-fi/fantasy action, but it certainly helps to grasp the ebb and flow of the match – the hot tag, finishing move and even pinfall interruption are all familiar aspects of matches to grapple fans.

There’s no major twist at the end of this third issue, but it’s not needed; the breathless action and drama carries us right through to the end – and to the next stage of the tournament. Do A Powerbomb is a surprisingly good, genuinely excellent comic that I’d heartily recommend to any reader – and for wrestling fans, that recommendation could probably be placed even higher.
