Can we just take a minute to appreciate Joe Simko’s gorgeous cover for Madballs vs Garbage Pail Kids #4? The nostalgia fuelled feels that gives me are absolutely off the scale. Truly wonderful stuff.

It pleases me to report that this fourth issue of the crazy gross out crossover continues to be just as fun as the rest of the series has been until this point.

Though split in two (with the usual clever activity pages included too), the only story this time around is Family Feud – which delves into the eternal rivalry between the Madballs and Garbage Pail Kids. The secret, forbidden love between Hornhead and Scary Carrie – which has been a sweet, charming thread running through the series, beneath all the puke and puns – looks set to be exposed. Could this unite the Kids and the Madballs at last – or will it lead to tragedy for the star-crossed lovers?

The puns from writer Sholly Fisch just keep coming – and artist Jason Crosby gives us the perfect depiction of both sets of characters, with wonderful visual gags, perfect storytelling and a wealth of incidental detail.

It’s a real shame to see this series come to an end, but hopefully there’ll be more on the horizon. I’ve definitely not had my fill of either the Madballs or Garbage Pail Kids just yet – especially as so many more characters pop up in this final issue. It’s been a delightfully silly, fun and appropriately disgusting ride throughout – suitable not just for old school fans like myself, but also for kids who might not even know who these 80s characters even are.

Fingers crossed they can slither and slime their way back to comic stores again soon!
