I’ve got a real soft spot for the nostalgia filled Saturday Morning Adventures line that IDW have been publishing for a while now.

Aiming to ape and reproduce the feel of classic Saturday morning cartoons, they’ve been great adaptations of their source material, with wonderful artwork and stories that evoke not just the 80s shows, but also old school comics too.

That means light hearted, family friendly adventures that don’t take themselves too seriously and generally end with everything being back to status quo by the final panel.

The same is true here, with this Dungeons and Dragons Saturday Morning Adventures comic being a one shot from IDW’s Endless Summer event.

Each of the Endless Summer comics features, as you’d expect, sun-drenched fun featuring the main characters of each series, with Sonic the Hedgehog, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and My Little Pony all getting in on the action.

In the Dungeons and Dragons comic, young Barbarian Bobby is upset at the fact that, having been trapped in the Forgotten Realms for some time, he and the other kids have yet to have had any time for a vacation.

So a summer holiday is on the cards – though of course, our heroes aren’t able to relax for long, with Dungeon Master’s advice being ignored, a rescue of an unlikely ally being attempted and even the appearance of a very familiar and very deadly villain all on the cards.

It’s lovely stuff, with some of the more inexplicable plot points only adding to the silly cartoon feel. The art is gorgeous, again really hewing close to the style and ambience of the cartoon.

On the strength of this issue, I’m going to check out the rest of IDW’s Endless Summer comics; they seem like just what the doctor ordered after a drab, wet summer in reality.
