Just months after its eShop is shut off for good and long after much of its online functionality has been cut off, the Wii U remains in the news for unfortunately negative reasons.

This time, it’s exputer who’ve picked up on the fact that Wii U consoles seem to be suffering a fatal, unfixable error due to memory leakage.

This seems to be occurring when a Wii U console has been left unused for some time; my own console was out of action for perhaps a year or more, though may well have seen sporadic use in that time anyway – which may of course lessen the chance of it becoming completely unusable.

It’s a huge blow for Wii U owners to realise that they may be just sat on a ticking time bomb with their consoles. What makes it even worse is that many users – myself included – transferred all of their Wii saves and downloaded games to the Wii U for ‘safety’ and backup.

It now looks as if that may not have been the correct thing to do.

The unique setup and capabilities of the Wii U secure it a unique place in the pantheon of consoles released in the last fifty years, but it is a huge disappointment to see that it may not last as long as a console such as the Atari 2600, which first emerged in 1977!

  1. It’s disheartening to hear about the Wii U facing such a serious issue with memory leakage leading to fatal errors, especially for those of us who have cherished memories with this console. The Wii U was a unique and innovative platform, and to see it potentially become unusable is a huge blow. Many of us transferred our precious Wii saves and games to the Wii U, thinking it would be a safe haven for our digital collections. This news feels like a betrayal of that trust. It’s a stark reminder of the impermanence of digital media and the vulnerabilities of modern gaming consoles. The Wii U holds a special place in gaming history, but it’s tragic to think that it might not withstand the test of time like some of the classic consoles. Hopefully, there’s a way to address this issue, or at least preserve the unique experiences the Wii U provided.

    1. Everything you’ve said there is 100% right. It’s really frustrating to see things like this happen and doubly so when you realise that many on disc games nowadays are bugged or otherwise incomplete without patches; what happens when these storefronts disappear?

We’re even going to be left with impermanent physical media too, unfortunately.

When you look at how unique Nintendo’s consoles are and how difficult it is to replicate the experience even via emulation – DS, Wii, Wii U etc – it’s even scarier. They should definitely be doing more from a preservation point of view, in my opinion.
