Kate Marsden, a journalist suffering from serious PTSD, has been hunting a killer, Darwin Collier, and has tracked him down to Peru. While on his trail, she nearly drowns, and fate steps in before the accident becomes fatal. Recovering with the aid of a Doctor and his assistant, she’s told that there’s a creature out there in the rainforest; however, she believes the killer on the loose is simply Collier up to his old tricks. With the near-drowning incident causing her to hallucinate, even if she did see the alleged creature, would she believe her own eyes? And is Collier really out there?

This is another strong showing from writers Dan Watters and Ram V, which smartly leaves the titular Gillman in the background somewhat, making it all the more effective and shocking when he’s front and centre.

Matthew Roberts, does a great job with the panels that the creature lurks at the corner of, but also excels when it comes to the more in-your-face sightings and sequences where the creature makes his appearance felt.

There’s such a great, palpable tension that really boils over spectacularly in this issue, and it’s a credit to the writers and artist, not to mention Dave Stewart doing a great job on colours, that it feels like a genuine, contemporary sequel to the original film.

It’s long overdue, but I’m very glad that the Gillman has returned.
