Just when you think you have some empathy for the snivelling, backstabbing and ambitious Decepticon, Starscream, he goes and drains it all away again once more.

Last issue, we got an awful lot of insight into what led Starscream to become the despicable Decepticon he is now. It was genuinely heartbreaking to see this once peaceful Transformer, who saw the beauty and wonder in the universe, fall from grace.

His ‘rescue’ in issue 14, after being left for dead by fellow Decepticon, Soundwave, sees him reluctantly paired up with some characters from GI Joe. And what they do to him to get him mobile again is darkly humourous, but Starscream’s behaviour soon takes a turn for the worse once more.

This has been such a fantastic series so far; not only modernising and updating the G1 (that’s generation one, for the uninitiated) Transformers storyline, but also meshing it with the GI Joe saga in a way that feels much more organic than in, say, fellow Energon Universe title Void Rivals, which has varied in quality since its launch.

I’m really digging the new twists on old stories that Daniel Warren Johnson has been giving us faithful fans, and I think that plenty of us were worried about the series when the license moved from IDW to Skybound. Clearly, we needn’t have been concerned;  the Transformers franchise is in safe hands.
