It’s been the worst kept secret in the industry, but Nintendo finally, officially revealed the successor to the Nintendo Switch today.

Titled the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s a console that doesn’t look to be reinventing the wheel, and instead could perhaps be seen to be the safest next-generation move that Nintendo have ever done (with perhaps the exception of Game Boy and Game Boy Color). From the title all the way down to what we’ve currently seen so far, this is a slight evolution, rather than revolution.

Of course, the infamous Nintendo Switch stick drift should be a thing of the past with hall effect joysticks; no doubt those lawsuits weren’t something that Nintendo were keen to repeat! The JoyCons now appear to be magnetic too, which feels like it should be a better solution than the harsh rails on the original Switch.

Another confirmed aspect was that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games should work on the Switch 2 (though there was also a caveat that some games may not be backwards compatible), which is sure to ease the transition to the next generation platform for many current Switch owners.

The only other element shown in the reveal was a very brief look at a new Mario Kart title, but it was definitely not enough to make any judgements, aside from the fact that what we saw doesn’t look all that different from the Mario Kart we’re already playing on the current Switch, but no doubt there’s plenty more to be seen with this and all other games due for the new console.

It’s been long overdue, especially as the Switch was already feeling a bit underpowered even at launch back in 2017. To Nintendo’s credit, their first party titles have continued to impress, and they’ve squeezed an awful lot of juice out of the console – but it’s definitely time to move on, eight years later.

With no more than a release date of 2025, I do wonder when we’ll see the Switch 2 hitting store shelves. I’m also very keen to see what Nintendo have in store for us when it comes to their major franchises, especially the next mainline Mario game. Hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later; a further update is due in April 2025, so watch this space!

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
