A girl and her younger brother roam the wastes, searching for artifacts that they can take back to their encampment. They soon run into trouble, however, and it’s clear that their world, infused with magic alongside science, is very dangerous indeed.

Though the official synopsis for Glow’s first issue gives a greater amount of detail for the world in which the story takes place, the first issue is heavy on the show, not tell, and leaves quite a bit of detail out, creating a much more mysterious air than may be expected.

It’s a really strong start, with a fantastic style, and I was almost immediately reminded of the video game oeuvre of Fumito Ueda. Whether deliberate or coincidental, Ueda’s gorgeous, enchanting, yet often eerily empty worlds, with their abandoned structures and deadly wildlife, are echoed at least in the opening sequence of Glow #1.

There’s some really intriguing details here not just in the world building (with a detailed map opening the issue, clueing us in to the fact that this is going to be a very detailed fantasy milieu), but also in terms of the characters themselves, who are really well defined over the course of the comic’s pages.

An in-universe journal is included in the last few pages too, which offer an even deeper delve into the mysterious world of Glow.

The seventh issue of Glow is set to launch a crowdfunding campaign via Kickstarter on the 22nd of April, and all previous issues will be available. You can sign up to be reminded of the launch here.

If you can’t wait that long, you can read the first six issues digitally via the official Mythworks website.

Many thanks to Mythworks for alerting me to the Glow series, and for sending over the first six issues for review purposes.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
