A teenage girl goes missing, and when her older sister is found dead after what appears to be a gruesome attack, the police realise that they’re in a race against time if they want to find the younger sibling alive. So they call in Jan Westron, a private detective with near-superhuman powers of observation, as well as experience of unconventional cases.

Westron is like Fox Mulder crossed with Sherlock Holmes, and he’s the star of this comic, with this first issue doing a fantastic job of setting up the grisly mystery (though we, as the readers, are privy to much more of the details of what led up to the murder than the investigators, there’s plenty of questions that remain), along with giving us some insight into who Westron is, and what he can do.

The art deliberately switches styles around halfway through the issue, with a flashback that gives us further insight into Westron’s past; Nicolás Nieto’s more naturalistic style gives way to a more stylised approach by Matiás De Vincenzo in the sequences taking place many years ago. Carla Somoza’s more muted colour palette pairs well with Nieto’s style, and De Vincenzo colours his own artwork in a more vibrant fashion, in such a way that it complements the change in the aesthetic approach.

It’s truly compelling stuff, brilliantly written by Shawn McBee and Maciej Jankowski, drawing inspiration from Polish folklore to tell its supernatural noir story. One of the coolest things about it for non-Polish readers is that the threat, whatever it may be, is unlikely to be a familiar one, so the mystery remains gripping right the way through to the final page.

And those dangling, unresolved threads definitely make the reader want more… immediately. Sadly, this first issue is all there is of Westron for now, and it’ll be launching on Kickstarter soon.

Many thanks to creator Shawn McBee for providing me with a digital copy of Westron #1 for review purposes.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Help support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!
