One of the very first games I played on my Meta Quest 2 headset, a number of years ago (so long ago that it was called the Oculus Quest 2 at the time!), Synth Riders, which was first released in 2019, is easily my most played VR game ever.

It helped me stay active during lockdown, and has kept me involved with amazing improvements and enhancements that have been added since it first released, with improved frame rates, Mixed Reality and immersive Experiences keeping Synth Riders feeling fresh and addictive even after all these years.

There’s also been a huge amount of DLC added in that time too, the latest of which is the 90s Rock Music Pack.

Though part of the appeal of Synth Riders is, to me at least, its excellent focus on synthwave and broadly similar electronic music genres, it’s branched out beyond those before, numerous times. We’ve had pop, electro swing and even neo-classical music, amongst many other genres, added to Synth Riders over the years, and the 90s Rock Music Pack expands its reach even further.

And just look at that track list! Though rock is definitely not a preferred genre of mine, there’s no denying just how iconic every single one of these songs are:

They all work brilliantly in Synth Riders too, and though the specific visual effects are created in a similar way to those seen in, say, the 80s music DLC packs (using obstacles to create shapes), it’s not intrusive or too distracting. That said, it can feel a little on the nose, such as the sun and rain referred to in the lyrics of Black Hole Sun appearing in the actual stage, as angular scenery passing above you during play.

If you’re of a certain age though (and I definitely am), this DLC pack is absolutely irresistible. I have had a blast playing through these songs; it’s an experience that’s nostalgic and futuristic all at once, and like other DLC and songs in Synth Riders, when it clicks for you, it’s an incredibly compelling and addictive experience.

There’s still no rhythm action game that hits the spot quite like Synth Riders does for me, and this 90s Rock Music Pack is such a glorious way of experiencing some absolutely classic songs all over again.

The Synth Riders 90s Rock Music Pack is now available on Meta Quest, PSVR2 and Steam VR, priced at $7.99 for the complete pack, or $1.99 per song individually.

Many thanks to Kluge Interactive for providing me with a code for the 90s Rock Music Pack for review purposes.
