The rogue group of Night Breed, the Blasphemers, have broken the commandments of Baphomet and tasted human flesh; however, that doesn’t stop a ‘Natural’ (their term for a normal human) named Ritegrig wanting to join, and become like, them. Helping them to prepare for a proper battle against Boone and his ‘Breed, Ritegrig arms them to the teeth and briefing them on their next steps. Meanwhile, Narcisse and Guido go on a shopping trip, while Boone and Lori have a heart to heart back at the cabin. Ashberry and Eigerman are visiting Ashberry’s former church, before going after the Night Breed themselves.
From that synopsis, you can probably guess that this is a pretty busy issue. There’s a lot going on, and it’s all a bit more interesting and, despite there being so many different characters, in so many different places, much clearer from a storytelling perspective too.
Narcisse proves himself to be a completely unfunny asshole once more, with a prank on a young woman at the grocery store which just comes across as mean-spirited.
Aren’t we supposed to be rooting for Boone’s crew? And just how did Narcisse survive being decapitated back in the original four issue adaptation of the movie anyway?
There’s a nasty piece of very Clive Barker-style horror, which has been lacking from this follow up story for the most part, when another human encounters the Blasphemers, and Kinski once more comes across as the most sympathetic and likeable of Boone’s ‘Breed.
Though The Blasphemers has been pretty uneven and mostly unsatisfying so far, I actually enjoyed the slower pace and more character-based focus of this issue. By the end, the pieces are just about in place for a deadly showdown; it’s unlikely that issue #9 will be a similarly character-focused issue, but of course we shall find out what it’s like soon enough!
