It makes me very happy when UDON get to play in more Capcom sandboxes. For years, they’ve been adapting the Street Fighter games into comic book form. Knowingly campy, action packed and always filled with absolutely gorgeous artwork, they’ve become some of my favourite ever comics, despite a shaky start.
When UDON adapted Final Fight into a recent mini series, their love for Capcom’s 1989 scrolling beat ’em up was on full display. So when I saw that they were creating new Mega Man comics, with a series of one-shots covering the various incarnations of Mega Man to have graced consoles over the years, I couldn’t have been more excited.
In Mega Man Timelines #1, our hero is chilling at home, when a mysterious villain sends him a message; a burning image of Mega Man himself, imprinted on the chaos and destruction downtown. So, with trusty dog Rush on hand to assist, Mega Man sets off to stop the bad robots.
That setup is all we need to get some proper, beautifully rendered action sequences, and if that was all this was, I’d still have been happy (seriously, I’m never disappointed with the art in an UDON Studios comic). However, there’s some genuine heart and emotion at the centre of this story, and that was something I wasn’t expecting. It’s not the deepest story in the world, but it’s very good at making you care about its characters, and not just the good guys either.
With this only being the opening chapter in a series that’s, excitingly, being written by a rotating cast of UDON’s finest (and at least one familiar name to readers of another famous blue video game character), Mega Man Timelines is off to a fantastic start, and I can’t wait to read more issues as they arrive.
