Part four of The Blasphemers is the penultimate chapter, and along with a big fight between Boone/Cabal’s group and the renegade ‘Breed, we have some moments of reflection, and even an origin story of sorts for at least one character on both sides. The stage is then set for next issue’s final showdown.
I’m still a bit puzzled as to why Boone is so against being referred to as Cabal, or why he keeps flip flopping on his role and his so-called destiny. It’s all a bit tiresome at this point, and does make you wish that he’d just make his mind up either way. He was so keen to join the Night Breed in the first place, and seemed immediately accepting of his role; yet The Blasphemers seemed to change his stance on that almost immediately, and for no obvious reason.
One of my favourite things about this issue was Kinski’s origin; I’ve always had a soft spot for the moon-faced ‘Breed character, who (even in the Nightbreed movie) comes across as one of the most honourable and likeable of the ‘monsters’.
Antagonist Ritegrig also gets a bit of backstory here, but it fails to justify his current motivation (though it does explain why he’s so fucked up; it’s pretty grim).
Though The Blasphemers seems to have been dragged out quite a bit, with weird pacing and strange character beats, this is one of the stronger chapters (with another excellent cover showcasing a single character in gory detail; this time it’s Oral and his horrible mouth), and there’s only one more to go before it wraps up. It’s definitely about time!
