If there was a prize for the most defiantly old school comic to be published in 2025 (even if it has been published before; thanks to a reader for pointing that out so delicately to me!), it wouldn’t be a surprise to see TMNT Journeys #1 win it. Despite being 25 years old, both the visual and narrative style of TMNT Journeys #1 feels even older than that; this is a comic which directly continues the original 80s adventures of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, by one half of the creators of the series, so it’s no wonder it feels like such a throwback.

In this story, the Turtles take on the Manhattan Maulitia (not a typo), and find them geared up and smarter than expected. Plus, April and Casey have domestic worries that could have a big impact on their future.

Though of course original Turtles fans do still exist (I’m over here waving frantically of course), it’s definitely the case that it’s difficult to know, so many years on, who this is truly for. It’s an intriguing slice of missing history, but with so many cool, contemporary TMNT comics now available in a modern, slick and even more mature style than these OG comics (which now feel like they’re trying too hard to be edgy, having long passed the point at which they were considered satire), I’m really not sure that it works right now.

It’s interesting, for sure, but I don’t think it’s something I’ll be keeping up with, and I don’t think it’s going to make much of an impact after the two and a half decades since it was originally published.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human created content (which has never been plagiarised or otherwise copied from the hard work of other writers), you can donate and help me to keep this site running.

Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

All donations are gratefully received and will help me keep the lights on here – as well as help to keep my writing dream alive! Please be aware though: there’s no pressure. I just hope you’ve enjoyed reading my article!

  1. My mistake, I thought these were previously unpublished. I have amended the review accordingly. Nowhere do I mention that mature = explicit, and that wasn’t the point I was making. Thanks for the comment though.
