Aero the Acro-Bat is back, but is anyone pleased to see him? After his disappointing first game (check out my review of the fairly mediocre Sunsoft Collection 1, which includes Aero the Acro-Bat), is Aero the Acro-Bat 2 any good?
Well, it’s an improvement. Yet it still suffers from poor level design, unintuitive mechanics and a really unappealing main character.
Of course, this is a Sunsoft Collection, not just Aero the Acro-Bat. So how do the other games fare?
There’s more enjoyable, tank-based, bouncy platform action in Blast Master: Enemy Below, a decent sequel to more titles featured on Sunsoft Collection 1. Pri Pri Primitive Princess! is a weird Game Boy puzzle platformer that I struggled to get my head around. As it was a game that never saw a Western release, it’s cool to see it here, however.

Ufouria: The Saga is a NES platformer with some truly lovely character design and interesting mechanics. Another platformer, Daze Before Christmas, is a 16-bit title with some fairly generic looking visuals, but it’s charming enough, and the holiday theme sets it apart too.
Galaxy Fight: Universal Warriors is a technically impressive fighting game with some genuinely lovely visual effects; it’s not bad to play either.

Finally, we have Aero the Acro-Bat spin-off, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel. Fear not; though it is ever so slightly politically incorrect, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel is way better than the series it is spun off from, with a much more enjoyable set of mechanics for its anthropomorphic-animal-with-attitude main character.
On the whole, Sunsoft Collection 2 is a far stronger cartridge than the first, and one I’d definitely recommend if you weren’t sure which of them to pick. It’s not perfect, but its hit rate is definitely way higher.
You can buy Sunsoft Collection 2 from Amazon.
