Two absolute classics of the point and click genre make their way to Evercade in Broken Sword Collection, the 44th release in the main range of console games for the retro platform.

Yes, that’s right; both Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars and Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror appear here in their PlayStation versions, rather than their original PC form.

That’s a shame, because these ports, while admirable (and very popular!) were always inferior versions of the original games; the animation feels jittery, and the spoken dialogue is also delayed while loading, for just a few examples of the issues here.

There’s also problems with the frame rate in general which affect some puzzles, making more than one maddeningly tight in terms of the speed required to complete them.

Blaze added in mouse support for the Evercade following the release of Broken Sword Xoll, so if you are playing on the Evercade VS or Alpha, it’s well worth connecting a mouse to play these two games. It’s not a complete solution to the problems I mentioned, but it definitely helps.

In any case, both of these Broken Sword titles, issues aside, are substantial experiences that’ll last you for quite some time. Even though they suffer a bit from the quirks of the classic point and click genre, with some weird logic to a few puzzles, the writing in general is fantastic, the presentation is superb and the story is excellent. The same goes for both games.

So, if you can overlook the flaws with these particular versions, you’ll find a really meaty and satisfyingly cerebral pair of titles in the Broken Sword Collection, which you can really sink your teeth into.

You can buy Broken Sword Collection from Amazon.

Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

There’s no pressure of course, but I’d be truly grateful for any support that you could offer – and it’s easy to do so at either of these links: Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or PayPal.

Any donations are truly appreciated – and I also appreciate you taking the time to read my articles. Remember: this whole article was by Jason Brown, and appeared on midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
