Well that was quite the exciting announcement today; not only are we getting a second collection of Activision Atari 2600 titles (with some absolute bangers included), but also a long overdue, third Mega Cat cartridge too. Oh, and the small matter of a Rare-themed Super Pocket, including Banjo-Kazooie built in! Let’s take a look at each of these in turn.

Activision Collection 2

The first Activision Collection was excellent, and showed off what I consider to be pretty timelessly playable games from the 80s. I do understand that, if you didn’t grow up playing these games like I did, that your mileage may vary; they are, after all, incredibly basic in nature.

Yet for me that’s part of their charm. Their arcade immediacy really works for brief sessions of addictive play, though of course the inclusion of the overly ambitious Space Shuttle kind of blows that argument out of the water.

This second collection features more great titles, and more that can lay claim to being among the very best games on the humble Atari 2600. My personal favourite 2600 game ever, H.E.R.O., is here, as is the excellent Pitfall II, the brilliant, Battlezone-esque Robot Tank and superb sequel, River Raid II.

So though this 50th (!) cartridge in the Evercade’s console game library might be an acquired taste for some people, for me it’s absolutely essential.

Another eclectic collection of modern retro games arrives with Mega Cat Studios Collection 3. There’s a few puzzle platformers here, some top down titles and just an overall, good mixture of styles showcasing contemporary game design for classic consoles. Though the Mega Cat Studios cartridges tend to be a bit of a mixed bag, the good stuff is always really good, so they tend to be worth picking up.

Both Mega Cat Studios Collection 3 and Activision Collection 2 are available to pre-order now, and will be released on the 30th of April, 2026.

Super Pocket: Rare Edition

I love the Super Pocket consoles. Though the screens can sometimes feel like they could be a bit bigger, they’re solidly built, the toyetic colour schemes give them a gorgeous visual appeal and their excellent, curated selection of built in games always makes them worthwhile.

Not only that, but the fact that some games remain exclusive to the Super Pockets, rather than appearing on Evercade cartridges, makes them even more enticing.

There’s a really good selection of titles included on the Rare Super Pocket too; for me, the fact that it has N64 title Banjo-Kazooie (which I suspect will remain exclusive to this console), plus the hugely challenging yet excellent NES games Snake, Rattle ‘N’ Roll and Solar Jetman make this essential in my opinion. It’s not as if it’s short of other excellent games either, with an eclectic compilation covering plenty of Rare’s 80s and 90s history.

Of course, Super Pocket consoles are fully compatible with the Evercade’s entire cartridge library too, so you aren’t just stuck with the games it’s loaded with.

The Rare Super Pocket is available to pre-order now, and will be released on the 26th of June, 2026.

It feels like an exciting time to be an Evercade fan again, particularly as Taito Arcade 3 and Turrican Collection have also just been released. Happy retro gaming, Evercade fans!

Check out the Data East Super Pocket on Amazon too, currently on offer for a very brief time, as of the time of writing!
