There’s a very noir-esque feel to the first issue of Mort, though plenty of other elements are layered on top of its hard-boiled core, to give the comic its own, unique feel.

It opens.with a shocking, supernatural attack that gives us a very clear indication of the type of deadly creatures that exist in this world, before we meet the eponymous protagonist. Mort is a funeral director who additionally dabbles in some very unusual, nocturnal activities. He’s visited by a mysterious woman who has a somewhat odd proposal for him, setting in motion a most complicated situation, involving several varieties of supernatural creatures and clans.

Right from the first page, Mort #1 impresses with its style and genuinely brilliant world building. Though it has an unusual setting, the exposition is very well handled and never feels unnatural in its delivery. The unique status quo allows for plenty of surprises in the narrative too, with plenty of unforeseen developments occurring throughout the pages of this issue. Writer Travis Brown really nails the unique, supernatural noir vibe here.

Nate Walkington’s art is phenomenal; bursting with character and detail. There’s a nicely naturalistic feel to the art, with a great deal of excellent body language and facial expressions, effortlessly conveyed. It doesn’t skimp on the gore when required, either.

From this first issue alone, it looks like we’re in for a long night with Mort, and I’m going to be happily accompanying him, albeit at a bit of a distance considering who he associates with…
