Following the events documented in Bram Stoker’s famous book, Dracula, the Count returned to the land of the living, seeking to atone for the horrors he was responsible for in his previous life. We join Dracula on a mission alongside the Allies in World War II, tasked with stopping a train full of Nazis from reaching its destination. Yet a few of the passengers on board, along with their test subjects, may complicate matters somewhat for Dracula…

Right from the opening panel, this is an absolutely wild ride. Kenny Porter writes Operation: Iron Coffin like a relentlessly-paced, blood-fuelled action movie, with Dracula taking down Nazis like a supernaturally-powered John Wick.

Tyrell Cannon’s stylised artwork is a fantastic fit for the material; blood and guts are everywhere, and Dracula himself is oozes cool, 70s-style aura with his long moustache, longer hair, shoulder pads and frilly shirt. It’s like a Hammer Horror movie with a contemporary action movie’s budget and subject matter.

There’s a very slight pause in its lightning fast Nazi-killing,.as the vampire makes hisbway through the train, to fill us in on Dracula’s backstory, but this gives us some very important details to help us understand why Dracula has made such a dramatic and effective face turn.

And the challenges ramp up for our vampire protagonist as he makes his way through the first stages of the train and the grunts, to a boss fight and a major plot twist all before the credits roll on this issue. It’s absolutely superb.

And any comic which opens s with Dracula being dropped from a plane into a moving Nazi horror train, in his coffin, has to be seen to be believed, right? Seriously, go read Operation: Iron Coffin #1 now. You can thank me later.
