I went into this comic pretty blind. I mean, of course I’m aware of Red Sonja, but I had no clue that somewhere along the way, the She-Devil With A Sword had adopted a daughter.
Not only that, but a daughter who was once possessed by the spirit of fire, and who, as an adult free of possession, retains the very cool ability to generate flames; often applying them to her sword for a nice power up.
In this first issue of her solo series, Sitha has a rescue mission on her hands, and doesn’t hesitate to use her abilities to make it a successful one. Though larger complications are around the corner, even with her target successfully rescued…
Though Red Sonja comics aren’t always so stoic and serious as you’ll find many Conan stories (which Sonja originated in) are, they aren’t known for their humour.
Sitha’s comic, on the other hand, has a much lighter and quippy tone, and her character seems to be having so much fun taking out very bad guys (and…other things).
It’s not just Sitha who’s having a blast, either; writers Mirka Andolfo and Luca Blengino establish that comedic tone early on, and just on the strength of this issue alone, it’s clearly very fitting for Sitha and her adventures.
The character work is superb and very well established without needing to read any background material too; it’s a fantastic jumping on point. Also, Valentina Pinti’s art is a great complement to the script, and everything is beautifully realised (including a rather large enemy that I keep alluding to, but shall not spoil).
I picked this issue up from Empire Comics in Portsmouth, having no prior knowledge of its existence at all. And now I shall definitely be looking to acquire the rest of the series!
Hi! I’m Jason, and I write for midlifegamergeek.com, every single day. Not only do I earn no income from my writing here (though I may earn small fees from affiliate links posted on my pages; as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases from these links), but it seems that my work has, at times, been stolen and re-used by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
