I was a bit too young for Marvel’s The Savage Sword of Conan comics in their heyday. Yet I always saw how widely praised they were, and consequently as an adult I have gone back and read some of them. Though there are some problematic elements, they do offer some fantastic, really epic-in-scope, barbarian action.

So I’m so glad to see Titan Comics carrying on the mantle with their new magazine title, also titled The Savage Sword of Conan. It hews so closely to the old school publication that it’s printed in black and white too. And it’s absolutely glorious.

Volume 3 collects issues 7-9 of Titan’s series. The big news here is that Roy Thomas, who is responsible for so much of Conan’s comic book history, returns to write the character here.

It’s very welcome, and Thomas being paired with the fantastic Roberto de la Torre is an absolute match made in heaven.

Another aspect that this series does very well is exploring other Robert E. Howard creations. Some from Conan’s universe, and others outside it, in their own stories. Pirate Queen Bêlit and Kull (another savage warrior/King) for example, or the more obscure Breckenridge Elkins and Cormac Fitzgeoffrey.

The oversized format really allows the art to breathe too, helping to add that aforementioned epic scope to the proceedings. There’s something about the black and white artwork, not to mention the fantastical subject matter with its violence, muscular bodies and impressive creatures, which really gives The Savage Sword of Conan a truly timeless feel.

The page count and the length of the stories in every issue, not to mention in these three-issue collections, make The Savage Sword of Conan one of the best value titles you’ll currently find being published and available in comic stores.

If you’re on the fence, just pick up any issue; most are self-contained, and you’re likely to find yourself absorbed in no time at all.
