As someone with only a basic familiarity with Vampirella, this Winter Special does a great job of showcasing the character, her powers and the types of threat she comes up against.

In this one-shot, Vampirella is kidnapped to provide blood for a bio-hacking, immortality-obsessed billionaire. Of course, you can’t keep Vampirella out of action for long.

This special is very well written by Liam Johnson, and really is a good entry point for newcomers. Though her origins aren’t touched upon, plenty of other elements are showcased; her vampiric abilities and super strength, for example, as well as the fact that she isn’t actually a vampire in the classic sense.

The bio-hacking angle gives the story a decent amount of relevance too, though this aspect is mostly shoved aside by the very crunchy, in-your-face fight scenes and accompanying gore.

The visuals are delivered by Marc Borstel, with colours by Jordi Escuin Llorach, and have a very realistic, detailed look. Some of the facial expressions can feel a little posed and stiff at times, but I was really impressed by the action sequences as well as the creature design. There are some lovely touches; an almost Animorphs-style transformation was a highlight.

Overall then, I really enjoyed this special, and I’m glad I managed to pick it up. With the 2026 Summer Special having been recently released, I’ll make sure there’s not as much of a delay in covering that one!
