I’m no prude (and I’m a big fan of Dynamite’s Red Sonja and Vampirella cosplay covers), but even with the latter character’s skimpy look, they’re usually quite a bit less explicit than this one. I know it’s hardly hardcore, but even so, it does seem to be quite in your face; that said, this was originally an amateur photo directly posted by the model herself online, two years ago, and it must be pretty cool for the artist herself to actually feature on the cover of Vampirella in costume!

Anyway, what do you expect? It’s Vampirella’s Summer Special! There’s a certain irony in the fact that this story opens with Vampirella visiting Pompeii in the modern day, in a trenchcoat; in stark contrast to that cover, she’s covered up almost more than I’ve ever seen her, in my admittedly limited experience of the character.

She’s hurled back in time to just before the cataclysmic eruption that destroys the city, and sets about helping to free the local slaves from their mistreatment and servitude.

And that’s it, really. It’s a nicely self-contained story, and though it is a little generic in feel, Vampirella does at least get to use several of her vampiric powers over the course of this issue.

It also helps that the Special has an all-female creative team; Erica Shultz writes (and provides lettering too!), Adriana Melo is on art duties (doing a great job, it must be said) and Ceci de la Cruz provides the colours.

Pretty solid then, and also doesn’t require much in the way of knowledge of Vampirella before reading, given how it’s a standalone story that takes the character into a historic event. So it’s pretty newbie friendly, and other covers are available if the cosplay variant feels too NSFW for you!
