After reading the entirety of horror mini-series Stray Dogs, I wasted no time in checking out ongoing series Feral, by the same creators.

It has a very similar, horror-movie-meets-Don-Bluth style. Where Stray Dogs focused on a group of dogs owned by a potential serial killer, Feral instead sees a virus spreading among the animal population, and the story takes the form of a zombie apocalypse (of sorts), told from the point of view of a group of cats.

It’s stunning. The cute aesthetic, juxtaposed with the moments of terror, panic and gore, works so well. It put me in mind of other ‘cozy’ horror comics such as Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, for example, and of course Stray Dogs itself.

The art is incredible, the character work is fantastic and there are some heart-rending twists and turns in the story.

And that’s just in this first volume! It goes to some seriously dark and twisted places as the story continues, but that’s for another time and another review. Just know that, if this kind of cutesy style horror is up your street, particularly if you enjoyed Stray Dogs, then Feral will be something you’ll be riveted by. I know I have been!
