I realise that I’m very late in picking up and reviewing this comic. However, on a recent trip to London, I discovered the Transformers Store within the converted Battersea Power Station. I believe that it’s the only one of its kind in the world, and it’s full of cool, exclusive items, as well as merch featuring a Transformer whose alt mode is Battersea Power Station itself: Powerplex.

It’s heaven for a Transformers fan, but it’s just a shame that this Transformers fan is broke. That didn’t stop me from picking up a few small souvenirs though, including a copy of the Energon Universe 2025 Special #1.

In the comic are several short stories from a variety of creative teams. The first is probably the best, combining Transformers with GI Joe and MASK; the latter of which would have been a cool glimpse at what was ahead for Matt Trakker, Miles Mayhem and co as they made their Energon Universe debuts. The story sees Autobot Hound and GI Joe’s Clutch doing the classic comic book team-uo thing, which sees them at first coming to blows before realising they’re allies.

Next up is a very brief GI Joe story spotlighting some very bad guys. A cool Transformers story follows, with musically-misunderstood Autobot Jazz being kicked out of a band and discovering a new sound.

The only letdown is the Void Rivals story, which is steeped in obscure Transformers lore and just feels like it’s trying to whet the appetite for a big event. I wasn’t grabbed by this one at all, despite the appearance of rhyming Transformer Wheelie and the delightfully nasty Quintessons.

The writing and art is of a very high standard throughout though, and it does feel like there’s something here for fans of any corner of Skybound’s Energon Universe, even if one of the stories isn’t quite to their taste.
