I hugely enjoyed the irreverent, pun-filled action in the first issue of Tae Kwon Donkey. It also had some surprisingly grim moments amongst the silliness, and a good amount of depth when it came to the motivation of the story’s big bad, Crab Maga.

In this issue, the titular Tae Kwon Donkey and his allies are training to defeat their ruthlessly vengeful enemies, and must learn to respond in such a way as to avoid further conflict.

Yet they’re discovered by the enemy, and despite a complete prophecy that they’re determined to see come to fruition, there may be some serious challenges ahead for the good guys.

Though it’s hardly a new thing, I’ve really enjoyed the recent resurgence of comics which juxtapose cute, silly or cartoony visuals with horror and violence in the subject matter. Tae Kwon Donkey is a really good example of this approach, with the silliness and references to both real martial arts and martial artists, as well as the anthropomorphic animals themselves, providing humour amidst a rather serious, bloody and deadly uprising.

It’s really effective, and very well told in Seth Balestrieri’s script, as well as with artist Ryan Best’s clever, dynamic page layouts and weighty, exciting action. There’s an early montage sequence that’s hugely impressive too, and despite there being an awful lot going on, from a storytelling perspective it’s never unclear.

I love the hilariously downbeat summary, delivered by a robot, on the final page too. It wraps things up very well, and definitely leaves you hungry for more Tae Kwon Donkey action.
