Having read a few of her specials and crossovers recently, I thought it’d be cool to check out some of Vampirella’s ongoing comics. As her mainline series has not long been restarted at a new #1, and I’m only a few issues behind, it felt like a good time to jump in.

Damn, was I wrong on that. Legendary comic book writer Christopher Priest takes the reins here, and his dense, layered style, mired in Vampirella continuity, makes this a very complex and fairly inaccessible read for newbies.

There’s an awful lot going on in this first issue, and a defiantly old school feel with lots of little editorial note boxes referring to prior events in various volumes and issues of Vampirella.

Given how I enjoyed this storytelling complexity in Priest’s absolutely iconic, late 90s/early 00s Black Panther run, I’ve a feeling that I may settle in to his style and the surprisingly deep history of a character that I had, perhaps unfairly, deemed to be little more than titillating fun for an increasingly aging male audience.

Even if most of the details went over my head, the layered, multi-character approach was certainly an interesting one. I was left incredibly confused about what was going on, given the narrative jumps back and forth, as well as just how many characters are involved in whatever is happening (no shade to artist Davis Goetten, whose work is clear enough from a visual standpoint given the confusing script he’s dealing with).

That said, I’ll give it a few more issues to see if I can get on board with Priest’s distinctive storytelling style.
