Though it’s only a one shot, Vampirella vs Red Sonja: Red City #1 is mired in a shared continuity that makes it a little confusing for the casual reader.

Dracula is the ruler of an Earth which is comprised of various realms smashed together, and if our titular heroes, along with their allies, can get rid of the Vampire Lord, the world should be peaceful again. Yet the method used to rid themselves of him comes at a price for Vampirella, and while things do change for the good guys, it’s not in a way that they could have foreseen.

Kicking off with exposition and a big showdown, it feels as if things will continue to get exciting after the first action sequence. Yet the story doesn’t really go anywhere of note, and even a late stage twist of shifting loyalty doesn’t really raise much excitement.

It doesn’t help that the proofreading is among the worst I’ve seen from a big, mainstream comic company. There are numerous, embarrassing typos all over the comic, which is really disappointing. The art is fine for the most part, if a little cartoony in places, but it’s a real letdown in action sequences, with more than one moment that’s really unclear in terms of what’s taking place.

It feels like this would be more satisfying had I known more about the hybrid Earth, which is at least interesting in terms of its cyberpunk vs fantasy aesthetic.

Sadly, we don’t get a confrontation between Sonja and Vampirella, making the comic’s title pretty misleading. Overall, quite a letdown.
