I’ve said this many times over the years I’ve been writing here, but one of the biggest joys in my life has always been rooting through bargain boxes at comic shops and at Cons, finding long lost treasure that I would have never otherwise happened upon.

Case in point right here: a trip to the fantastic Empire Comics in Portsmouth yielded a few quirky finds, with Amazing Forest #1 among them. They say never judge a book by its cover, but we comic readers don’t follow that advice at all, basing our purchases on cover art alone, probably more often than we’d care to admit.

I had no idea what the Amazing Forest series was, or what I’d find inside. When I saw that gloriously weird, incredibly detailed cover though, I had to add it to my collection.

It turns out that this is an anthology of short, surreal sci-fi stories, infused with varying levels of horror. All four of them have remarkable, and very different, art styles. The subject matter varies hugely too, from the horrifying post-slime apocalypse of Tank, the twisty lycanthrope horror of Wolf Mother, the heartbreaking return of a lost father in Ronnie the Robot and the very weird tale of obsession and ignorance in Bird Watcher.

It’s really good, and it’s a shame that it seems to have completely disappeared off the radar after just six issues. It’s a decade old now, but the stories are so atemporal in nature, and subject, that they haven’t dated a bit. If you happen to find this, or any other of the Amazing Forest comics in the wild, the right thing to do is to rescue them from obscurity and give them a loving home.
